Happy new year 2013! I enter it with a true optimism that new exciting changes are underfoot on many levels. The mad hungry guy gang at my house had the greatest Christmas. Whereas Calder commandeered the Thanksgiving turkey (attempting his own version of my tried and true recipe) to underwhelming results, the same can’t be said of Christmas. Our Christmas dinner of choice, a standing rib roast, usually cooked in the oven got taken outside to the Big Green Egg but NOT without a proper mother-son consultation this time. The results were outstanding. Not only did the meat taste amazing, but the robust fire meant that an impromptu side dish was born. The carrot prepped for one dish and the brussel sprouts for another ended up together in a cast iron skillet with chopped bacon and shallots utilizing the last of the outdoor fire. This was the happiest accident ever resulting in a new recipe I will repeat. And, of course, the yorkshire pudding is an addictive necessity every Christmas too. Here’s the thing–with all boys now well over 6 feet tall along with their 6’4″ popalops–my gratitude for them and the food to feed them for an abundant holiday is the greatest gift of all. So much to come in the new year!
