Orange Creamsicle Float

Makes One Float
Inspired by a famous soda in Philadelphia made with mandarin oranges and traditionally drunk alongside the steak bomb, Philly Cheesesteak (page 68). This is a drink, dessert, and old-fashioned popsicle all in one.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Mandarin oranges
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 scoops best-quality vanilla ice cream
  • Club soda

DIRECTIONS

  1. Remove the rind from the oranges. Supreme the oranges into a small bowl and squeeze the juice from the membrane over them. Stir in the vanilla.
  2. Transfer oranges and juice to a tall glass. Add the ice cream to the glass. Top off with the club soda. Stir once and serve immediately with a tall spoon.

REINVENT
Just as this recipe deconstructs, reimagines, and rebuilds the Creamsicle float, you can reinvent the Good Humor classic King Cone. Take the same ingredients and layer them into a parfait.

NUTSHELL RECIPE: king cone sundae
Crumble up a sugar cone and place half of it in a tall glass. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Pour some hot fudge sauce (see page 286) over it. Sprinkle on chopped toasted pecans or walnuts. Repeat, and top with whipped cream.
