Vietnamese Coffee Shake
The French brought coffee beans for cultivation to the country in the late 1800s, along with their tradition of un petit café in the morning. Chicory coffee, such as Café du Monde, is often used. Serve this along with a Banh Mi sandwich (page 82). Poured in small chilled cups, it’s also a delicious dessert on a cool day.
- 2 cups strong brewed chicory coffee (such as Cafe du Monde), chilled
- 1/2 cup half-and-half
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 4 cups ice
- In a blender, combine coffee, half and half, sweetened condensed milk, and ice. Blend until smooth and frothy, 30 seconds. Transfer to drinking glasses and serve immediately.
cook's note
Guilty Pleasure: Keep a can of sweetened condensed milk in the fridge. One spoonful of that cool, creamy sweetness is like a bite of candy, fudge, butterscotch, and ice cream all rolled up into one reverie-inducing indulgence.
