Rijsttafel and Coconut Rose
[picasa username=”madhungrylsq” albumname=”DutchIndonesianRijsttafel”]
As everyone knows, I am ravenous for all types of food knowledge, from the most basic everyday simple family cooking to the most elaborate unusual word cuisine and every day is a learning journey.
Amsterdam is known for its Indonesian food and this is something I have never delved into. With something like 18,000 islands (including Java and Sumatra) its the 4th most populous country in the world. Calling so many different traditions “Indonesian food” is an oversimplification. The Dutch colonized there for several centuries-so when folks returned back to Holland the new style Dutch-ized food emerged.
Rijsttafel (a dutch word for rice table) is the most classic example of this food. Dozens of small hot and cold dishes all complementing each other in flavor, color, heat and texture is distinctive, exotic and utterly intoxicating. One thing that made my mom happy is the pervasive use of coconut. She is a fanatic for it. She started with a coconut drink and couldn’t get enough of the most fabulous topping where dried ground up coconut and lemongrass is tinged with turmeric. Coconut was her dessert, natch. If you ever visit this old and fantastic city of canals and bridges–eat your Rijsttafel at Tempo Doeloe!
As for my Mama and this trip. She is 82 years old with a youthful mind and spirit! But the ole bod has a lot of miles on it. It’s tougher for her to move around but move around she must! A recent fall left her with 2 black eyes (only, thank goodness). So, we got her a leopard print cane and hit the road. Keeping her spirit nourished and healthy for as long as possible is my main goal! She’s having the time of her life and we’ve survived day 3! Next we see the work of a dutch painter and drink and dine in a classic cafe from the 1920s.
For all your comments, support and activism for MHTV, I can only say that you all are the bomb-diggity!!!

Lucinda, enjoy your trip with your mom and hope to see you back on TV with your wonderful show. Since you are not currently on the Hallmark channel, I am not watching their programming. I’m not a TV person BUT your show was the exception.
I just discovered your program a few weeks ago and enjoy it so very much. I hope you will continue with programing some way. I love the recipes and think you have a lovely presentation.
Lucinda,
This is such SAD news! Lucinda you were one of my highlights of the day–I watched your show everyday. I am about the same age as you and considered you a friend coming into my home each day. I adore your sons as well (I am a mom of girls). Please come back–I am not the type of person that ever writes in or expresses my opinion but this has prompted me to write in and I will also call in!
All my best,
Debbie Athanason-McCaffrey

BTW, did you go for a canal tour?

I am wondering if the Food Network will pick up your series? You are a wonderful teacher and it is sad to waste a true talented expert in the food industry. I did email the Hallmark network and told them that I hoped the Food Network would pick your show up!I hope that you will be back on the air shortly.
