We adore Rosie. Our prior dog, Steve, had passed the fall before, and we weren’t sure if we wanted another. But we kept making routine visits to the Cape Ann Animal Shelter, as an exercise in perpetual dog love. Maybe kismet would lead to something.
A new litter came in, not yet up for adoption. My mother was enamored with them, beautiful little cinnamon-colored pups. When we finally returned to see if any were still available, only one was left, and her name was Lychee. Lychee nut. We adopted her and the bond was instant. We anointed her Rosie, after our late, beloved Grandma Rose. The moniker was pretty much the consensus right off the bat. Her namesake would have approved.

They told us she was a retriever mix, found at a high school in Georgia. She grew up big, fast, and strong, yet she was always a cozy cuddler inside the house, never missing a chance to curl up beside whichever human had the best spot. What I like to say about Rosie is, “Get you one who can do both.” At home she’s a love bug who will snuggle with you. Outside she’ll swim, run, hike, and fetch until your arm gives out. She’s an outdoorsy dog with a lot of energy, easy around people, and fine with other dogs for the most part. Given her size, I only let her play with ones that are physically bigger than her, which is funny but the truth.

About that retriever mix. As she got older she developed a little ridge on her back, a very mild underbite, and an athletic boxer look about her. When I was googling mixes, I had her pegged as a boxer-ridgeback, which would match her coloring too. We eventually did the vet DNA test. She’s 50 percent purebred Rottweiler, 25 percent American Pit Bull Terrier, and 25 percent Staffordshire Terrier. Not a drop of retriever (or boxer or ridgeback) to be found anywhere lol.

We call her Little Wo Wo. We call her Canela. We call her Little Cinnamon Girl, from the Neil Young song. She’s sweet and adorable, and we don’t know what we would do without her. She was immediately part of the family and as important as any of us. Everyone falls for her when they meet her, and you would too.
