Bruges, Chocolate, and Waterzooi

We took a day trip (3 hours from Amsterdam) to the amazing medieval city of Bruges, a city as bustling as London in the 15th century filled with gilded architecture, canals, mussels, beer, chocolate and gorgeous northern light. It didn’t take long to get our fist hit of chocolate–a modern take on the Belgium waffle–hot off the griddle and sandwich around glorious melted chocolate. We took in the Sunday flea market–where all the items were purchased by dealers from the surrounding old homes so the bric-a-brac was all completely local. I bought an old cookie tin with the Bruges city scape pressed in relief. Rose–an antique dealer in her day– was in heaven.

Our meal was eaten at an old Bruges haunt serving classic old Bruges type dishes and delicious beer. Rose’s Waterzooi–an old school staple–is really close to the French chicken fricasee (profiled in details in MSL October mag). And, no Belgium meal is complete without the world famous Frites (aka French fries but don’t say that around these parts). The potatoes themselves are sweet/savory with a fantastic texture, fried to a crisp on the outside and served with mayonaise. The beer I had, a Triple Karmelit, tasted of coriander and citrus with a foamy topping as delicous as w lightly whipped meringue.

Another beautiful day of travels with mama Rosie.

Lucinda your food descriptions make me hungry and I just had dinner! It sounds like you and your mom are having a great time and eating your way through your vacation – just as it should be! Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

    Mad Hungry,

Hallmark has treated the show so poorly. I hope they are smart enough to see there is a following.

I love your show and pray it comes back with some new ones. My secret dream would be to be on one show with you someday. I don’t care if they don’t put Martha back on though. Sorry not trying to be rude but that’s how I feel. Getting tired of Waltons, they should put you there 🙂

How bad is Home and Family? I couldn’t get through 5 minutes. When the heck will Hallmark wake up and bring back Mad Hungry?

  • Carol October 10, 2012 at 11:34 am

Please bring back Martha and Lucinda. What were they thinking??
The other shows are truly a bore.

  • Shari October 10, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I agree — Home and Family is terribly boring. Bring back the Martha Stewart Show and Mad Hungry. Contact Hallmark and let them know how you feel!

  • Barbara Lagow October 10, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Dear Lucinda: I’m missing your show and have just sent the Hallmark Channel
as email telling them that I have gone from watching your show every day to
never watching the channel. Hope the great outcry brings you and the program
    back soon.
    Sincerely,
    Barbara Lagow

PS. I am 75 and have never written to a television personality or a channel
    before.

I called The Crown Network also at 1-818-755-2400. Spoke to someone there and voiced my opinion about not wanting Mad Hungry to go away! We all need to call this number to get her back on the air. They asked me where I was from & who my cable provider was. Together, we can make a difference! 🙂

  • Jake October 10, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Everyone just needs to keep calling and emailing. 1-818-755-2400
Home and Family is horrible and Marie is fair. There is no reason why Mad Hungry can’t continue with ALL NEW EPISODES.

  • Lorna October 10, 2012 at 8:51 pm

  • NELDA PURDON October 11, 2012 at 1:31 am

Lets keep up the great work Mad Hungry fans! I have been contacting the Hallmark Channel USA daily for the past week! The I’M MAD AND HUNGRY campaign is picking up speed (that’s what I’ve been calling it anyway). Calling, emailing and posting on FB DAILY is the only way we are going to make a difference. I have just started turning off the TV at 11AM because there is nothing of any quality to watch! Lucinda – your fans miss you!

  • Nancy DeAngelis October 11, 2012 at 2:38 am

The Hallmark station has made a Big Mistake. The
station now has a borning agenda. I miss Martha
Stewart and Mad Hungrey. I watch these progams
every day. Please call 1-818-755-2400. Maybe
together we can make a difference.

Thanks for keeping all of us “lonely” fans in the loop with your food travels! So disappointed with the change in Hallmark’s schedule. We don’t even turn it on anymore. So glad I have your book (^_^) Hope this hiatus won’t last too long. Feels like a good friend moved away!

  • NELDA PURDON October 11, 2012 at 3:48 pm

This day needs to turn around ! A solid black cat ran out in front if my car this morning. I’m trying to laugh it off. I live in Cincinnati and the Reds are LOSING the final game of the NLDS and I turned on the TV again out of habit to watch Mad Hungry and realized that wasn’t happening. My 4 year old niece is begging to watch a cooking show on TV and it won’t be Lucinda thanks to Hallmark. I’ve contacted them AGAIN!

  • Tina October 11, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Like Nelda, I and all my friends are contacting Hallmark with an email and phone call. We all want Mad Hungry back on.

  • Nathalie Dumon October 12, 2012 at 3:59 pm

    Dear Mad Hungry
Waterzooi is a typical dish from the beautiful city of Ghent, also in Flanders. You might have tasted waterzooi in Bruges, but you should come to Ghent (15 minutes from Bruges) to taste the REAL stuff 😉
    Kind regards

  • Cathy Guber October 12, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Mad Hungry is the only cooking show I watch. Used to watch quite a few but now I’ve cut it down to Lucinda only. She does the whole menu – main, sidedish, dessert – even drinks sometimes. She cooks for Real People, carries a conversation during the show that’s between Martha’s arrogance and Rachel’s Laugh it Up.
ONLY show I watch on Hallmark !

  • diane petrillo October 12, 2012 at 10:04 pm

Miss lsq and Martha!the new shows are boring and I will not watch this channel

Looking ahead “Home and Family” will not be repeating twice a day starting the week of October 22. (@ 1 pm) They have “Frasier” scheduled for those 2 hours. As I enjoy “Frasier”, one of those hours belongs to MAD HUNGRY. A brand new episode at 1:00 and a repeat at 1:30. Come on Mad Hungry viewers, tell Hallmark Channel, to bring back Mad Hungry.

  • Tara October 14, 2012 at 9:15 pm

I hope Mad Hungry returns. I want to see John Contratti back again cooking with Lucinda. He has the coolest blog.

I soooo miss Mad Hungry. I have learned so much from watching the show, my family is eating healthier now that I have been cooking the recipies myself. If that isn’t reason enough to bring back Mad Hungry then I don’t know what else is. PLEASE bring back Mad Hungry!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!

  • Marlene Clark October 15, 2012 at 10:10 am

I have stopped watching Hallmark when they took Mad Hungry off the schedule!!!!! I LOVED the show. I am not a young cook. I have seen them all starting from Julia and The Frugal Gourmet. I soooo enjoyed watching and listening to you every day. I also appreciated the recipes that did not send you to the grocery store every day to spend $20.00 or more for one dinner. Let me know what I can do to bring you back to us.

  • Karen F. October 15, 2012 at 1:25 pm

If I were to live anywhere in Europe, my first choice would be Bruge. I love that city. The food is amazing (your waffle pic is making me want to hop a plane there right now), the cobble streets and the fact that they ride their bikes everwhere makes it a prime place to live. Plus, its really beautiful at night. Your post brings me back 🙂

  • catherine from Minnesota October 20, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I could not believe it when at first I couldn’t find Mad Hungry!! Searched all over the channels. This is so upsetting to me esp when the new show is so ridiculous, I can’t even stand to watch it! The hostess is so annoying!! Please bring back Lucinda and her wonderful show–I never missed it.
