Two Dutch Cookies

Published by

Amsterdam is really a trip. It seems as though there are more bikes and boats than cars zipping around this city, which is connected by an ancient Labyrinthian connection of canals and bridges. But there are two types of crazy good cookies that are just as good as it gets at the source. Stroopwafel are two thin wafel-type patties sandwiched with a ooey-gooey oozey type caramel mixture–a total-texture WOW!  And speculoos–a very old style cookie that is a biscuity (as in cookie)-short dough which is imprinted with different types of images or scenes by using a rolling pin or old style ‘press’ pictured here.  Like so many old European cities, there are lots of bakeries with local specialties and a culture that supports and loves them.  Walk the streets early morning and the scents of fresh baked goods just wafts through the air.  More later on a dinner that has me reeling from the intoxicating spices and I am now trying to figure out how to get more soon!

I am so sorry to hear your news. I love your show much more than any other cooking show I have seen. All of the other ones have become so very commercial. I love everything you cook and I enjoy the fact that your boys get in there and help you. I love it! Please keep up the good work and let everyone know where we can find you when you return. I hope you have an enjoyable time off and will be anxious to return. Poo to the Hallmark Channel!

The new “Home and Family” show is terrible. Hallmark has the nerve to repeat it. Four hours of garbage. Mad Hungry can return. It can be back on very soon. We all love the show so everyone must email the Hallmark Channel and call. 1-818-755-2400. Let’s get all new episodes of Mad Hungry made.

    Steph

I love how much passion there is out there for Mad Hungry. Just read a comment from John Contratti on his blog that Mad Hungry is the best show out there. We all know that Mad Hungry is special. It has a warm homey feeling. It has to come back.

Enjoy your trip-Love and Speedy Recovery to Mom-And don’t rush the time off!!!!-
Thanks for the postings from Holland-
Just sending a quick “Dutch Tip”: Try the smoked AND the fresh herring fillets (served on papers or boats! The fillets are done right on the street and cut in 2″ tidbits-with a toothpick–from the street vendors in Amsterdam–I’ve been trying to get fresh and smoked herring fillets like those (even at the famed Classic Grand Central Sation Fish Market Restaurant-who run a fresh Herring Festival each Year–But nothing compares to those we had there 10 years ago-My mouth still waters for them!!!!

Much Love and Thanks for all your Sharing-Carol

  • Daphne October 9, 2012 at 12:03 pm

    Hi LSQ,

First of all, if you’re still in NL, you must indulge in patat frites WITH mayo and simple croquetten from the automat — they are a MUST! Soooo yum! Being of Indo decent myself, you’re right, rijstafel is the best…the spices…mmm.

More importantly…we need to get you back on the AIR! You are the ONLY “cooking show” I watch and set my DVR to record. I will do MY part to get you back, although rest-assured, I will follow you wherever you go. (The new Home & Family show? Bleh. Mark Steines is great, but not in this format and definitely not worth recording.)

SEE YOU BACK ON THE AIR!!

  • Janice October 13, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Your show is amazing and your personality is the sunshine of morning television. We watch, we check out your blog, and we print recipes from our iPad. It is simply impossible to eliminate the best cooking show ever televised! Viewers will never abandon their quest to get Mad Hungry back on the air. A loyal audience is a gold mine. We vote with our remote controls. My remote control does not go near Hallmark Channel on weekdays anymore. See you soon!!!!
